What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium fixture that serves as the replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth. The benefit of using implants is that they don't rely on neighboring teeth for support - they act much like your natural tooth and are permanent and stable.

The implant is surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw. It will bond with the bone over time and serve as an anchor for the replacement tooth. The patient may need to allow up to six months for the bone to grow around the anchor and firmly hold it into place. Some implants require a second surgery in which a post is attached to connect the anchor to the replacement teeth. With other implants, the anchor and post are already attached and can be placed at the same time.

After the healing phase, restorative teeth are made and fitted to the post portion of the anchor. Dental implants can replace one or more teeth, add support to a partial denture, or be used to attach a full denture.

When is a dental implant typically recommended?
When a tooth is lost or removed due to decay, a dental implant (in conjunction with a porcelain or ceramic crown) is an ideal option for the patient. This solution looks and functions just like a natural tooth. Patients who have implants report that the artificial teeth look and feel natural and are very secure when chewing.

Do I need to see a specialist to have implants placed?
Most dental implant procedures are performed right here in our office by Dr. Danner using local anesthesia. This allows our patients the comfort and convenience of having the procedure done by a dental professional they already know and trust.

How long does the process take?
The process for placing a dental implant can take up to nine months to complete. Each patient heals differently, which is why the completion time varies.

Is anyone a candidate for dental implants?
In order for dental implants to stay in place, the patient must be in good health, have healthy gums and the proper bone structure. People who are unable to wear partial or complete dentures may also be good candidates. The success rate for dental implants decreases dramatically if you suffer from chronic problems, such as clenching or bruxism, or systemic diseases such as diabetes. Additionally, people who smoke or drink may not be good candidates.
