What is a crown?
A crown (also referred to as a "cap") is a restoration that completely covers a tooth and helps to strengthen and improve the tooth's appearance. Crowns are necessary when a tooth is generally broken down to the point where a filling will no longer do the job. If a tooth is cracked, a crown holds the tooth together and seals the cracks to prevent any further damage. Crowns are also used to protect weak teeth from fracturing, to protect a tooth that has had a root canal, to attach a bridge, to cover a dental implant, or to cover teeth that are badly shaped or discolored.
Can other people tell that I have a crown on my tooth?
At Danner Dental, all crowns made for adult patients are tooth-colored and non-metal, which means they look very natural and blend in beautifully with your other teeth. Most crowns done in our office can be completed in one visit using a special computerized machine that fabricates the crown right here in our office. This saves our patients time and convenience, and offers immediate results.
How long do crowns last?
Crowns should last approximately 5-8 years, however with good oral hygiene and regular dental exams, most crowns will last for a much longer period of time. Some damaging habits like grinding your teeth, chewing ice or fingernail biting may significantly decrease the life of your crown.
How should I take care of my crown?
- Avoid teeth grinding (to prevent damaging or fracturing the crown).
- Avoid chewing ice, hard foods or other hard objects such as pencils and fingernails.
- Visit your dentist regularly to check the health and strength of your crowns.
- Brush and floss daily - cleaning between your teeth is especially vital to crowns, since plaque can build up in the area where the gum meets the tooth and can cause gum disease and/or dental decay underneath the crown and possibly make your crown become loose.
