What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a serious, potentially life-threatening sleep disorder that affects approximately 18 million Americans. The Greek term "apnea", which means "want of breath", refers to moments in which a person stops breathing for 10 seconds or more while sleeping. With each occurence, the sleeper's brain briefly wakes up in order to resume breathing, resulting in sleep that is extremely fragmented and poor-quality.
What are symptoms of sleep apnea?
- morning headaches
- excessive sleepiness during the daytime
- irritability and impaired mental or emotional functioning
- excessive snoring, choking or gasping during sleep
- insomnia
- awakening with a dry mouth or a sore throat
Why should I be concerned about having sleep apnea?
The fatigue that a person with sleep apnea usually experiences can be dangerous to himself and to others; studies have shown that patients with sleep apnea are so tired during the day that, when driving, their performance is similar to that of a drunk driver. If left untreated, sleep apnea can also lead to high blood pressure, heart attack and possibly stroke. If you already have a heart condition, sleep apnea can further aggravate your condition by placing stress on your heart during sleep.
What can a dental office do for someone with sleep apnea?
People with sleep apnea or other sleep-related issues now have the option of a non-invasive treatment through our office. Instead of the traditional surgery or C-PAP machine, which many find difficult to use, Danner Dental is one of a select few dental practices in Northeast Ohio that can provide patients with a specialized appliance for relief from sleep apnea. This appliance is worn while sleeping and repositions the lower jaw to open the airway, resulting in a more comfortable and restful night of sleep.
Dr. Danner has undergone specialized training and is certified in Dental Sleep Medicine, which allows the dental and medical fields to combine their expertise to provide better solutions for patients. With the use of a custom-fitted sleep appliance, patients are less likely to experience sleep apnea, and snoring can be alleviated or eliminated altogether.
Please call us for an initial consultation and explanation of the specialized sleep appliance.
